Yuguang Island Art Festival

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

This year's theme: "Dwelling On the Island,"

With the theme of "Dwelling On the Island," the event aims to heal visitors during the pandemic with works focused on such topics as the woods, the sunset, and the beach. The large-scale art installations were created by both Taiwanese and Japanese artists.

The organizers hope the exhibitions, performances, and outdoor dining experiences will have a healing effect.

I enjoyed this small festival so much that I went twice. The first time I was discovering amazed the scenery, the beach, the small booths nested in the middle of the woods; the second time I just wanted to enjoy again being surrounded by people and in a festival! It is so strange to now feel surprised and at the same time uncomfortable around a large crowd of people nowadays but I was so happy to find out that it is easy to get used to it again! What I love about Taiwan is how disciplined people are. For this event we all had to go through a tent where our ID and our temperature was checked as well as making sure everyone had a mask. The ID is not to track you for malicious reasons but simply to be able to track any person who could have been in contact with a Covid infected person and inform immediately all the people that were at the same place/event. No one is complaining or protesting but simply following instructions calmly. And guess what, the result is that Taiwan can host festivals and concerts since the end of last year already!

You want to have an idea of the crowd I am talking about?

Another idea of the crowd is the amount of scooters in the parking lot!! And no I did not lose mine which I still don't know how!

After crossing the bridge, we arrived on the small island of Yuguang. This spot in Tainan is one of my favorite spots even when there are no festivals. Depending on the time of the year you can see a lot of surfers and amazing sunsets.

My 2nd day at the festival

I was on my own Sunday since it was Thumb Sweeping Day and everyone was with their families celebrating and praying, so I decided to go back to the festival on my scooter for more pictures! I was also worried I could not retrieve the pictures I took two days before with my L16 camera because I have been having software capabilities issues.

And since it was hot and after lunch, I decided to start with the food side of the festival and grab a refreshing drink: local peach cider!

After the cider, that I drank a little too quick because it was hot and I was thirty, I needed a little food (yes it's a good excuse!)

Amazing, fluffy chocolate chips pancakes with bananas, strawberries, warm chocolates and some Cheerios for decorations. Let's just say I was glad I didn't have lunch because it was a lot more than what I expected!!

And back to some walking and pictures taking to eliminate the pancakes!

This festival only happens once every 2 years so don't miss it in 2023!!
